World Teachers Day 2024 

Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5 September on the occasion of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday. The tradition of Guru and disciple has been going on in India since ancient times. Gurus have been given the highest status in India since ancient times, so much so that the status of the Guru is considered above God. On the occasion of this Teachers' Day, know about 10 ancient Gurus and their disciples.

Maharishi Ved Vyas

According to ancient Indian texts, Maharishi Ved Vyas has the status of the first Guru. That is why Guru Purnima is dedicated to Ved Vyas. Maharishi Ved Vyas was considered to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His full name was Krishnadwaipayan Vyas. Maharishi Ved Vyas composed the Vedas, 18 Puranas and the epic Mahabharata. The disciples of the Maharishi included Rishi Jaimin, Vaishampayana, Muni Sumantu, Romaharshan etc.
 

Maharishi Valmiki

Ramayana was composed by Maharishi Valmiki. Maharishi Valmiki is considered to be the inventor of many types of weapons. Lord Rama and his two sons Luv-Kush were disciples of Maharishi Valmiki. Maharishi Valmiki taught Luv-Kush to use weapons, due to which Mahabali took Hanuman hostage.


Guru Dronacharya

In Mahabharata, 100 sons of Dhritarashtra and Gandhari and 5 sons of King Pandu were his disciples. Dronacharya was a great archer Guru. Guru Drona was born in a Droni i.e. a vessel and his father's name was Maharishi Bharadwaj and he was an incarnation of Devguru Brihaspati. Arjun and Eklavya were both great disciples. To protect his boon, he asked Eklavya for his thumb as Guru Dakshina. Guru Drona was an incarnation of Devguru Brihaspati. Duryodhan, Dushasan, Arjun, Bhima, Yudhishthira etc. were among his prominent disciples.
 

Guru Vishwamitra

Vishwamitra was a descendant of the great sage Bhrigu. Vishwamitra's disciples included Lord Rama and Lakshmana. Vishwamitra taught Lord Rama and Lakshmana the use of many weapons. Once, being angry with the gods, he created a separate universe of his own.


Parshuram

Parshuram was a Brahmin by birth but a Kshatriya by nature. To avenge the insult of his parents, he destroyed all the Kshatriya kings on earth. Parashuram's disciples include warriors like Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna.


Daityaguru Shukracharya

Guru Shukracharya is considered the god of demons. His real name is Shukra Ushanas. Guru Shukracharya was given Mrit Sanjivani by Lord Shiva, so that the dead demons could be revived. Guru Shukracharya also taught the sons of gods along with the demons. Kach, the son of Devguru Brihaspati, was his disciple.
 

Guru Vashishtha

Guru Vashishtha is also counted among the Saptarishis. It was Vashishtha who was the Kulguru of Suryavansh who asked King Dasharath to perform Putrayeshti Yagna due to which Lord Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna were born. These four brothers took education from him.
 

Devaguru Brihaspati

Brihaspati has been given the title of Guru of the Gods. Devaguru Brihaspati nourishes and protects the Gods by using Rakshoghra mantras and protects them from demons. Warriors pray to him for victory in war.


Guru Kripacharya

Guru Kripacharya was the Guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas. Bhishma had appointed him to teach the Pandavas and Kauravas. Kripacharya was adept in archery like his father. Kripacharya also had the boon of being immortal. He also taught the lesson of weaponry to King Parikshit.


Adiguru Shankaracharya

Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya is considered the religious Guru of Hindus. He was born in a Brahmin family of Kerala state. At the age of seven, he had mastered the Vedas. Shankaracharya had established 4 holy places including many monasteries in India. It is believed in Sanatan Dharma that Adi Shankaracharya was an incarnation of Lord Shankar.
