Mata Chandraghanta is considered to be the third form of Goddess Durga. According to histotical beliefs, it is known that when Goddess Brahmacharini gets Lord Shiva as her husband, she becomes Chandraghanta in the form of Adishakti.

Mata Chandraghanta: Mahishasur story 

According to historical beliefs, there was a time when all the people from the entire world were troubled by the atrocities of Mahishasur and with time his terror increased on earth. It was then when Goddess Durga incarnated herself into a powerful and divine form. 

Mata Durga's incarnation was manifested with the combined power of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh Ji and she was also adorned with various weapons from all other gods and goddess. This incarnation of Maa was know as Chandraghanta
