According to the legend, a sage named Shilad was a brahmachari. Seeing the end of the dynasty, his ancestors asked Shilad to produce children. Shilad did penance to Lord Shiva, wishing to have a sonless and deathless child. Then, after some time by the boon of Shiva, while plowing the land, Shilad got a child born from the land. Shilad named him Nandi. Shiva made Nandi his Ganadhyaksha.
