Why is Yama Deep Daan done? (Yama Deep Daan Kyu kiya jata hai?)
On the day of Dhanteras i.e. Kartik Krishna Trayodashi Tithi, after worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber ji, the members of the house light a four-faced lamp in the south direction, which is called Yam ka Deepak. It is believed that the south direction is the place of Yamraj, and lighting a lamp in this direction brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to the house. Women light this lamp and pray to Yamraj for the well-being and health of the family. It is believed that with the grace of Yamraj, there is always happiness in the house.

Yama Deep Daan described in Puranas
The importance of lighting Yamdeepak on Dhanteras is mentioned in Skanda Purana. It is said in the Purana that on the Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, a lamp should be lit for Yamdev outside the house in the evening.
'Kartikasyate Paksha Trayodashiyan Nishamukhe.
Yamadeepam Baharddyadap Mrityurvinishyati'.
Doing this prevents untimely death. The same thing is mentioned in Padma Purana, where it is said that lighting a lamp for Yamraj outside the house on Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month destroys death. According to these Puranas, lighting Yamdeepak brings happiness, peace, and prosperity in the house. This is the reason why Yam's lamp is lit on the day of Dhanteras and wishes are made for one's family
