Significance of Onam Festival

Onam, widely celebrated by the people of Kerala, is a Malayali festival celebrated in the Chingam month of the Malayalam solar calendar. Onam is celebrated on the day when Thiruvonam or Shravan nakshatra prevails in the Chingam month.

Onam commemorates the appearance of the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu and the return of the great emperor Mahabali. It is believed that King Mahabali visits every Malayali home and meets his people every year on the day of Thiruvonam.

History of Onam

According to Hindu mythology, King Mahabali of Kerala is believed to have defeated the gods. His glorious rule made him quite popular, prompting the gods to ask Lord Vishnu to intervene. To put an end to Mahabali's rule, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Vamana and tricked him into giving away all his land. He was banished to a lower world, but was given the boon to visit his land once a year. Since then, this festival is celebrated to commemorate the return of the king to his people.

Onam Puja Rituals

During the festival, people decorate their homes with Pookalam (exquisite floral carpets) and traditional art forms, and prepare Onam Sadhya. Elaborate, sumptuous feasts are also served in every household, and the feast ends with delicious Payasam. Onam Sadhya consists of over 26 dishes that are eaten on banana leaves.

People also follow the tradition of wearing new clothes and exchanging jewellery and traditional attire. Men prefer mundu, boys prefer pattu pavada and women wear Kasavu sarees. Apart from these, the celebration also includes many cultural activities, such as traditional games, boat races and cultural performances.
