The Amavasya date that falls in the month of Ashwin is also known as Mahalaya Amavasya and Mahalaya Amavasya is celebrated on this day. This year Amavasya will start from 9:38 pm on October 1, 2024, and will end on October 2, 2024, at 12:19 pm. This day is especially important for Hindus.
This day is the last opportunity to pay tribute to our ancestors. If a person has not been able to perform any rituals for the ancestors during the entire Shraddha time, then if that person performs rituals for the ancestors on this day, he gets special blessings from the ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya Special Importance:
Mahalaya Amavasya marks the beginning of Navratri celebrations across India and the end of Shraddha or Pitru Paksha, a period of sixteen days when Hindus honor their ancestors through rituals. According to Hindu tradition, the souls of the departed reside in Pitru Loka, a realm between heaven and earth.
During Pitru Paksha, it is believed that these souls visit their descendants, who perform rituals to pay respect and express gratitude to their ancestors. These rituals, especially on Mahalaya Amavasya, are considered highly auspicious and are believed to help the souls attain peace and salvation.

Apart from this, after waking up in the Brahma Muhurta in the morning and taking a bath, water should be offered to Lord Shiva.

One should worship the ancestors and feed a Brahmin or temple priest for the ancestors.

On the day of Mahalaya Amavasya, roti should be fed to cows, dogs, and crows.
