Spiritual and Scientific Reasons Behind Bathing at the Magh Mela 2026
The ritual of Ganga Snan and donations begins from the first day of the Magh month, but it is believed that the significance of Ganga Snan increases when the sun moves from the south to the north. The Magh month starts from Paush Purnima, 3rd January and continues until Mahashivratri, 15th February, which is given special importance. Click here to read your daily horoscope.
The scientific reason behind this is that during the month of Magh, the Ganga water is at its peak in terms of special minerals and medicinal properties. Taking a dip in the Ganga river boosts the body's immunity and cures skin diseases.
During the Mahabharat, when the Pandavas killed the Kauravas, Yudhishthira also attained liberation from this sin by bathing at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. Later, when Rishi Gautam cursed Indra, Indra also attained liberation from the curse by bathing in the Ganga river at Prayagraj during the month of Magh. To show the significance of this month, Tulsidas has described it in the Ramcharitmanas, that "Magh Makar Gati Ravi Jab Hoi, Tirathpatihin Aav Sab Koi", which means that when the Sun enters the Capricorn zodiac sign, gods, demons, Kinnaras, sages, and humans come to the Triveni Sangam to bathe and strengthen their relationship with God.
The Significance of Bathing at Triveni Sangam
It is believed that observing Kalpavas during the month of Magh, Lord Vishnu protects his devotee from all difficulties and problems. During Kalpavas, a person eats only one sattvic meal a day, sleeps on the ground, bathes in the Sangam three times, and chants only the name of God. Kalpavas refers to a one-month period, which brings the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Devotees get free from all the sins by bathing in the Triveni Sangam, and one attains salvation.
The Significance of Charity in the Month of Magh
The best time for bathing is before sunrise, when only the stars are visible in the sky. It is also believed that bathing three times in the Triveni Sangam brings the same merit as performing ten thousand Ashwamedha Yagya. Along with Ganga Snan, charity also holds a special significance. Donating clothes, grains, money, and blankets to the needy people is considered auspicious. The month of Magh brings cold weather, and donating blankets and clothes to the needy people to protect them from the cold is considered highly auspicious.
