Kalashtami August 2024: Kalashtami is a significant Hindu festival celebrated to worship Kaal Bhairav, the fearsome form of Lord Shiva. This festival is observed on the 8th day of the waning moon, known as Krishna Paksha Ashtami. The day after the full moon is considered most auspicious for the worship of Lord Bhairav. Throughout the year, there are 12 Kalashtamis, but the one that falls in the month of Margashirsha is particularly significant and is often called Kaal Bhairav Jayanti.
Kalastami is especially important when it falls on a Sunday or Tuesday, as these days are dedicated to Lord Bhairav.

Rituals and Observances During Kalashtami:
For the followers of Lord Shiva, Kalashtami is a crucial day. Devotees wake up before sunrise, bathe and perform special worship for Lord Bhairav to seek his blessings and atone for their sins. In the evening, they visit temples dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav for special prayers. According to beliefs, Kalashtami represents a fierce form of Lord Shiva. The legend suggests that Lord Kaal Bhairav emerged to pacify the anger and wrath of Lord Brahma.
On this day, performing Tarpan (ritual offerings) for ancestors, conducting pujas, and other rituals are considered highly auspicious. Devotees observe a fast and stay awake throughout the night in reverence. Those who follow the Kalastami Vrat (fast) are believed to receive blessings of prosperity and success in their lives.
Reciting the Kaal Bhairav story and chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered highly beneficial. Feeding dogs, especially black ones, is an important part of the celebration as dogs are believed to be Lord Bhairav’s vehicle. Devotees offer milk, curd and sweets to dogs.
Feeding Brahmin, particularly in sacred places like Kashi, is also considered very rewarding. The significance of Kalashtami is described in the “Adi Purana”, which outlines that Lord Kaal Bhairav, a form of Lord Shiva, is honored during this festival.
In the Hindi language ‘Kaal’ means ‘time’, and ‘Bhairav’ refers to the ‘fierce form of Lord Shiva’. Therefore, Kaal Bhairav is also called the ‘Deity of Time’ and is worshiped with utmost devotion by Lord Shiva’s followers.
According to Hindu legends, there was once a dispute among Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). During this conflict, Lord Shiva became enraged by a comment made by Brahma and assumed the form of 'Mahakaleshwar.' In this form, he cut off one of Brahma’s five heads. Since then, both deities and humans have revered Lord Shiva in his Kaal Bhairav form. It is believed that those who worship Lord Shiva on Kalashtami receive his divine blessings, and their suffering and negative influences are alleviated.
Kalastami is a day devoted to seeking the blessings of Lord Bhairav. It involves early rising, fasting, temple visits, and special rituals. Feeding dogs and performing rituals for ancestors are key aspects of this festival. This day is not only about honoring Lord Bhairav but also about seeking to remove obstacles and attain spiritual growth.
