Kalashtami or Kaal Ashtami is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Bhairava. The festival is celebrated on the 'Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha' i.e. the 8th day during the waning phase of the moon. The 'Ashtami Tithi' after the 'Purnima' is considered most suitable to please Lord Kaal Bhairava. On this day, devotees worship Lord Bhairava and observe a fast to please him. There are a total of 12 Kalashtami in a year.
Out of all the 12 Kalashtami, the Kalashtami falling in the month of Margashirsha is considered the most important which is also known as 'Kaal Bhairav Jayanti'. Kalashtami falling on Sunday or Tuesday is very special, as these days are dedicated to Lord Bhairava. The festival of worshiping Lord Bhairava on Kalashtami is celebrated with full enthusiasm and devotion in different parts of the country.
This month, Kalashtami falls on September 24, 2024, which is a Tuesday, and is observed during Ashwina, Krishna Ashtami. It begins at 12:38 PM on September 24 and ends at 12:10 PM on September 25.
Kalashtami September 2024: Rituals
- Kalashtami is an important day for the followers of Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees wake up before sunrise and take an early bath. They perform a special puja of Lord Kaal Bhairav to receive his blessings and seek forgiveness for their sins.
- In the evening, devotees visit the temple of Lord Kaal Bhairav and offer special prayers there. It is believed that Kalashtami is a fierce form of Lord Shiva. According to beliefs, Lord Kaal Bhairav was born to end the burning anger and rage of Lord Brahma.
- According to religious beliefs, offering tarpan to ancestors, and performing puja and rituals for them on the morning of Kalashtami is considered extremely auspicious.
- On this day, devotees observe fast and stay awake all night. Those who observe Kalashtami fast are blessed with happiness and prosperity and get all the success in their life.
- Reciting Kaal Bhairav Katha and chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered auspicious.
- Feeding dogs on Kalashtami is considered very auspicious as the black dog is considered to be the vehicle of Lord Bhairav. Dogs are fed milk, curd, and sweets.
- Feeding Brahmins at Hindu pilgrimage sites like Kashi is also considered highly fruitful.
- The glory of Kalashtami is described in the 'Adi Purana'. According to the story described in the Adi Purana, Lord Kaal Bhairav is worshipped on Kalashtami who is considered to be a form of Lord Shiva.
- In the Hindi language, 'Kaal' means 'time' and 'Bhairav' means 'the manifestation of Lord Shiva'. Hence Kaal Bhairav is also called 'Kaal Devta' and is worshipped with full devotion by the followers of Lord Shiva.
- According to Hindu legends, once during an argument between Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, Lord Shiva got angry with a comment made by Brahma. He then assumed the form of 'Mahakaleshwar' and cut off the 5th head of Lord Brahma.
- Since then, gods and humans worship this form of Lord Shiva as 'Kaal Bhairav'. It is believed that those who worship Lord Shiva on Kalashtami are blessed by Lord Shiva.
- It is also a popular belief that worshipping Lord Bhairav on this day removes all the sufferings, pains and negative influences from a person's life.
