Story of Jivitputrika Vrat
According to religious belief, there was a banyan tree in a village towards the west. Ten feet above the tree lived an eagle and below the tree lived a female jackal. Both became close friends. Seeing some women observing Jivitputrika Vrat, they decided that they would also observe this fast. Both observed the fast. On the same day, a man died in the village. The man was cremated near the banyan tree. That night it started raining and the female jackal was tempted to eat the dead body. In this way, the female jackal's fast was broken while the eagle did not break her fast. In the next birth, the eagle and the female jackal were born as two daughters of a Brahmin. In time, both the sisters Sheelavati and Kapuravati got married. Sheelavati, who was an eagle in the previous birth, had 7 sons and all the sons of Kapuravati, who was a jackal in the previous birth, died after birth. Kapuravati became jealous of Sheelavati's children and beheaded all of Sheelavati's sons. But, Jeevitvaahan deity brought the children back to life. The next day Kapuravati fainted after seeing the children alive. After this Sheelavati reminded her that in her previous life she had broken the fast due to which her sons died. Hearing this, Kapuravati died in grief.
