Why is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. According to religious belief, Lord Ganesha was born on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. During Ganeshotsav, everyone sits in Bappa's house and worships him with rituals for 10 days. There is a tradition of worshiping Lord Ganesha before starting any new work. Ganesha is called Vighnaharta who removes all the sorrows and pains in your life. The tradition of celebrating Ganesh Utsav in Maharashtra is from the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

History of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganeshotsav started from Pune, the capital of Maharashtra. The history of Ganesh Chaturthi is associated with the emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of the Maratha Empire. It is believed that during the Mughal rule in India, Chhatrapati Shivaji, along with his mother Jijabai, started Ganesh Chaturthi i.e. Ganesh Mahotsav to save their Sanatan culture.

After Chhatrapati Shivaji started this festival, the rest of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire also started celebrating Ganesh Mahotsav. During Ganesh Chaturthi, the Maratha Peshwas used to feed Brahmins and also do charity. After the Peshwas, the British rule banned all the festivals of Hindus in India, but still Bal Gangadhar Tilak started celebrating the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi again. After this, the first Ganesh idol was installed by Bhau Saheb Javle in 1892.

How did Ganpati Visarjan start?

There is a belief of installing Ganesh Ji on Ganesh Chaturthi and he is immersed 10 days after that. Many people will be curious to know why Lord Ganesh is immersed after bringing and worshipping him with so much reverence. According to religious scriptures, a very important story is hidden behind this.

According to the mythological story, Maharishi Ved Vyas prayed to Lord Ganpati to arrange the composition of Mahabharata in order. On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi itself, Vyas Ji kept reciting the verses and Ganesh Ji kept writing it down. After writing continuously for 10 days, layers of dust and dirt had formed on Ganesh Ji. Ganesh Ji took a bath in the Saraswati river on the 10th day Chaturthi to clean this layer, since then there is a tradition of immersing Ganesh Ji with rituals.
