There is confusion in people's minds about the date of Diwali this year, and when should Diwali be celebrated. There is a constant doubt in the minds of people whether this time Diwali should be celebrated on 31 October or 01 November. There is confusion about the date of Diwali because this year the date of Kartik Amavasya is falling on two days instead of one day. To remove the dilemma in your mind regarding the date of Diwali, we are giving you information by talking to experienced, learned astrologers and major astrology and Sanskrit institutions across the country. In Sanatan Dharma, the dates fasts, and festivals are calculated based on the Vedic calendar.
According to the Panchang, the festival of lights, Diwali, is celebrated every year on the Amavasya date of Kartik month, but this time Amavasya date is for two days, due to which there is confusion about the date of Diwali. That is, Kartik Amavasya's date is on 31 October as well as on 01 November. Dates have special importance in Hinduism and Udaya Tithi has even more importance. In Hinduism, fasts and festivals are celebrated based on Udaya Tithi.
Udaya Tithi means the Tithi which is there at the time of sunrise in the day and is given importance. In this way, some people are giving importance to Udaya Tithi and think it is better to celebrate Diwali on 01 November. At the same time, some people argue that Lakshmi Puja on Diwali is always celebrated during Kartik Amavasya falling between Pradosh Kaal and midnight, so Diwali should be celebrated on 31 October only. Let us put both these arguments to the test of the rules of astrology and Muhurta Shastra.
What are the rules of Vedic Shastra?
In the scriptures, it is prescribed to always worship Lakshmi on Diwali when it is Amavasya Tithi and Pradosh Kaal i.e. from after sunset till late at night, that is, celebrating Diwali in the Muhurta of Amavasya Tithi, Pradosh Kaal, and Nishita Kaal is considered auspicious. For this reason, most of the pundits and scholars of astrology believe that on the day when Amavasya Tithi of Kartik month falls, worshipping Lakshmi and celebrating Diwali from Pradosh Kaal to midnight is more auspicious and according to the scriptures. There is a religious belief that Maa Lakshmi appeared in Pradosh Kaal itself, due to which worshipping Maa Lakshmi and doing all kinds of sadhanas related to her in Nishith Kaal is of special importance.
According to the Vedic calendar, this year Amavasya Tithi will start on October 31 at 3:12 pm and will last till the evening of November 01. In this way, all kinds of Vedic conditions will be applicable on Diwali on October 31, whereas on November 01, 2024, Amavasya Tithi will be during sunrise but will end at 06:16 pm.
On the other hand, in some calendars, the end of Amavasya Tithi is told before sunset. In most cases, special importance is given to the Udaya date regarding the dates of fasts and festivals, but in some special circumstances, more importance is given to the date obtained keeping in mind other things and auspicious times. For this reason, most scholars and pundits are advising to celebrate the festival of Diwali on October 31, keeping in mind the Amavasya date prevailing between Pradosh Kaal and midnight. Celebrate Diwali on October 31 with this type of Lakshmi Puja.
